Guest of Cindy Sherman

Friday, April 03, 2009

In the 1990s, Paul H-O created a Wayne’s World-style public access TV show, "Gallery Beat," that poked fun at the oh-so serious art world. Then he started dating Cindy Sherman, art world royalty. She's best known for posing in her own photos, in innumerable made-up identities. Paul H-O became the faceless, nameless "plus one" of Ms. Sherman. So, as Paul tells Kurt, he made a movie about it: "Guest of Cindy Sherman."

Perhaps it just didn't make it to the final edit of this piece, but I can't believe Kurt Anderson didn't confront the gender-role stuff going on here. Being "Guest Of"a man has been the primary role for women in the arts until very recently. And a lot of Cindy Sherman's work confronts gender roles and other stereotypes. Perhaps it was assumed the listener would come away with this understanding but ungh everytime Paul O-H said Cindy Sherman was "cute" while ostensibly talking about her Art it turned my stomach and I was waiting for someone to confront him on it! The floating clip of a woman saying something about a "male ego" didn't sufficiently address this issue. It's a shame because the other two segments on this episode were some of my favorite moments on Studio 360.

How long is this movie playing in NYC? It sounds fantastic. That clip is very intriguing.
