I am always surprised that Allan Ball's "Six Feet under" is rarely mentioned as an honest portrayal of gay characters. The show portrayed very real people that I have met, known, or been, gay or straight. It wasn't a sitcom, but it went far beyond "Will and Grace" to show interactions between people that a greater public may relate to who does not live in New York. Granted that it played on cable, but so did "The "L" Word".
