Janelle Monae (Leital Molad)
Amid the 1900 bands who played the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas last weekend, Janelle Monáe stood out from the crowd. She's a funk-soul singer who fills her tunes with sci-fi and robot references. Her new album is Metropolis: The Chase Suite. Studio 360’s Leital Molad caught up with Monáe backstage.

I just came across Ms. Monae while perusing the NPR Fresh Air shows for the week. One comment recommended Studio 360 for the SXSW interview. Thanks to both these Public Radio segments for showcasing her talent [I wish the interviews were longer...]
Immediately went online to order Metropolis.
I'm glad Ms Monroe is in my music library now. I'm going to make everyone in my circle knows about her. I hope she comes back to Texas soon - an Austin City Limits show for PBS would be classic!
How did you ever find her in the sea of SXSW? Monae is incomparable!- polish, style, fun, wit, completely unsterotypical yet retro! And the sister can sing. Afro-futurism lives! (cf. Samuel R Delaney, Mark Dery) I'm a black playwright and composer who astrally travels too; can I get an introduction? But, I must confess, I have a hard time with androids and clones. Sun Ra needed his equal and opposite womanist Other. In these days of generic songwriters driving me to distraction, please follow the career of this true artist. Thx
Thank you so much for turning me on to Janelle Monae!
She is wonderful to hear and fun to watch.
I want to dance along.
The kicker is she is someone I can recommend to my teenage kids with no fear of them giving me the dreaded "Dad you're sadly clueless" look.
I look forward to seeing and hearing a lot more of Janelle, and of Studio 360.
She sounds great! Looking forward to hearing more of her music. Thanks for featuring such a great singer/dancer.
I saw this amazing, talented woman at NYC Soundstage this summer. It was the hottest day of the summer, and Janelle Monae gave the wildest dance performance I've ever seen. While singing, I might add. Our jaws dropped. My kids couldn't wait for her first CD to come out ... nor could I. I'm glad she's getting more recognition now. She's the kind of performer you want to know over decades to see how her work evolves over time.
Great voice. After all the yelling over a background of distorted band music that passes for singing, it is a pleasure to listen to her.
