The fashion writer Lynn Yaeger wondered what kind of advice the high-end fashion magazines were giving their readers during the Great Depression. So she plowed through some old issues of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar for some style hints for the economically-challenged.

Your use of the word "schizophrenic" is incorrect. It's not of "two minds" but a serious mental illness. Using it incorrectly spreads misinformation about the illness. Check your Webster's!
A society that teaches disdain for "looking thrifty" is sick to its core. When it comes to the utter superficiality of this one we live in, words fail. The real crime, in case anybody wonders, is to spend hundreds of dollars on a handbag in a world in which billions live in abject poverty.
