Aha Moment: e.e. cummings

Friday, April 30, 2010

As a child Quang Bao fled Vietnam and lived in a refugee camp with his family. They eventually settled in Sugarland, Texas, and he was in high school when he discovered e. e. cummings. "i like my body when it is with your" set him on the path to becoming a writer. Produced by Studio 360's Jenny Lawton.

I listened to this while measuring walls on a construction site. It was lucky it was break time, because I stood in the unfinished kitchen and cried. Maybe for the first time in years.

Thank you both Quang Bao and studio360 for a beautiful story beautifully told.

Quang Bao story spoke directly to my heart. From accepting myself as a gay man to holding my mom's hand as she died. I was moved to hear another voice speak my story and excited to hear another's passion for poetry. Thank you.

yes, me too, I would LOVE a copy of the "I love your body" poem - is it available? Can I buy it for $1 the way I could buy a song on itunes...? :)

Gorgeous. I don't know if itwas the story or the way it was told or the sound of this speaker's voice. I just put down what I was eating and started to sob.

Hi prof. s. --

The poem is by e. e. cummings:

So glad Quang's reading resonated with you -- it did with me.

Thanks for listening!

I enjoyed this story and I also love this poem. Just FYI, in February 2010 I set this e.e. cummings poem to music. The song title is "Big Love-Crumbs" and you can listen here:

I'd like to show Bao's poem to my students.

Could someone send me a link to the full text for "i like my body when it is with your"?

Thanks.

"Life's project is; finding, getting, giving love". That one utterance...so true and yet, has proven to be somewhat elusive for the propondernace of humans. Perhaps it is in the seeking, where the love truly remains...

Beautiful, beautiful segment. It made me cry. I had not seen my father in 20 years after my parents divorced. Ours was a frayed relationship that repaired. I thought of it listening to young Mr. Bao.
