Wayne Coyne and the Flaming Lips Wayne Coyne and the Flaming Lips (J. Michelle Martin-Coyne)

Kurt Andersen talks with Wayne Coyne, the mastermind behind the Flaming Lips, about a near-death experience. Nicholson Baker  reads from his newest novel House of Holes, which is about sex and pretty much nothing but sex. And the filmmaker-actress-writer-artist Miranda July adds a new item to her c.v.: fortune telling. She tries her hand at psychic readings for our listeners.

Wayne Coyne's Lips Are On Fire

Back in the 1980’s, the Flaming Lips were just an alternative rock band from Oklahoma. They toured for a decade before finally hitting it big in 1993 with their song "She Don't Use Jelly.” It was an ironic grunge anthem that landed them a cameo ...

Miranda July Sees the Future

Six years ago, the indie film Me and You and Everyone We Know took everyone else by surprise. It was a smart, funny first-time feature by the short story writer and performance artist Miranda July. Her second film, in which she also stars, is called ...

Design For the Real World: Super Mario Bros

When Nintendo released Donkey Kong in 1981, it was one of the only arcade games in which you did more than just blast space invaders. It contained an entire world, with a damsel in distress and an unlikely hero: a little Italian plumber named Mario. ...

Nicholson Baker's Literary Porn

He’s written books about World War II, poetry, the fate of newspapers. But as a novelist, Nicholson Baker has another side. Back in the 1990s, he published two R-rated works of fiction: Vox (1993) and The Fermata (1995).  Now he’s returning ...

Absurd Architecture in Your Neighborhood

Which of these things is not like the others? Last week on the show, Kurt Andersen went head to head with the conservative culture critic John Silber, who railed against the “absurd” work of architects Frank Gehry and Daniel Libeskind for their flashy ...

I enjoy Studio360 generally, but I'm disheartened that questions about Miranda July tended more toward looks and maternity than toward her uniquely creative and guileless art and optimism.

I'd love to hear more of Miranda July's take on "mom art." I was listening to this segment on my way to work after stopping at my doctor's office to have blood drawn for a gestational diabetes test. Fortunately I like my job, which is in a very female-centric art/craft industry. An exploration of the potential pitfalls and power of "mom art" involving women like July (and many other Studio 360 contributors & guests) would be fascinating. (Miranda, ftr, I was 38 when my first was born and will be 41 when this one makes its debut. So far, it was totally worth the wait.)

Coupled with driving past the local Long John Silvers during the Wayne Coyne interview, this episode was an invigorating way to start a Friday. Thanks!

Thank you guys for not immediately hanging up on that caller who was driving with a baby in the car. That was very responsible of you.

I'm a big fan of the show and just heard your piece with Nicholson Baker. The headless sex thing was of interest because I'm a HUGE fan of R Crumb and he is very into headless sex. In at least 2 issues of Big Ass Comix, Eggs Ackley outsmarts the Vulture Demoness by shoving her head up her ass and having all the rest of her available to his desires.

In His "Coffee Table Art Book", Mr Natural has pushed Devil Girl's head down into her body, put some sort of plumbing device on it to cap it off and then gives her to Flakey Foont to have his way with. I scanned a page from it but there is no means of attaching it. If you'd like to see it, send me an email.
Once again - love the show. Tim
