In 1989, Steven Soderbergh helped launch the independent film movement with Sex, Lies, and Videotape. Box office success followed with the Ocean's Eleven franchise, Traffic, and Erin Brockovich. But the filmmaker tells Kurt Andersen that he's ready to retire from movie-directing.

Special thanks to Film Streams and Omaha Performing Arts for the audio.

Correction: Matt Damon is to appear in Soderbergh's upcoming film Contagion, not Haywire, as was stated in the introduction.

Does anyone know when the trailer for Haywire is coming out?
And it seems to me that he's at odds with the Studio about how this movie is going to be perceived? So many reshoots and delays with this one. Makes me think something is wrong.

Thanks, Edward. Haywire and Contagion are both slotted to be released later this year, and the casts for both Soderbergh movies are chock full of A-listers, but you're right: Damon is in Contagion, not Haywire. Good catch!

Damon is in Contagion, not Haywire and no, it's not coming out next month.
