Jennifer Egan on A Visit from The Goon Squad

Interview

Friday, March 18, 2011

Jennifer Egan Jennifer Egan (Piete M Van Hattem – Vistalux)

Jennifer Egan's novel, A Visit from The Goon Squad, follows a group of music industry types — sleazeball executives, aging rock stars, kleptomanical assistants — jumping forward, backward and sideways in time. Innovative (one chapter, narrated by a child, is written entirely as a PowerPoint presentation) and poignant, Egan’s book just won the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction.  (Kurt Andersen's interview with Jennifer Egan first aired September 17, 2010.)

I had my first "growing old" moment yesterday. When I first took this new job, everybody commented on how young I looked (I got my PhD a few months shy of my 30th birthday). I was editing a student's scholarship letter yesterday for a study abroad program and she mentioned how she didn't want to be one of those people who gets to be 30 and regrets her life (b/c they didn't go abroad during college).

Hahahaha Guess I'm the epitome of old and regretful now.
