The winning listener slogan, submitted by David Fuller The winning listener slogan, submitted by David Fuller (Studio 360)

Last month, we asked for your suggestions for a new six-word tagline for Canada. And the slogans poured in, more than 750 submissions. This was one of the first, and it remained our favorite to the end:

"Canada: We’re not just colder, we’re cooler."
— David Fuller, Winnipeg

Canada isn’t always cold, Fuller insists. “And we’re usually patted on the head for being nice or polite or not too noticeable, which is also a little annoying after a while. A little bit like being told you’re a good kid.” And the recent flood of great Canadian bands is proof that Canada is cooler than ever.  When Kurt suggests a slightly shorter, snappier version of the slogan ("Canada: Not just colder, cooler."), Fuller is game: "I'm all about editing. I work for a newspaper."

As his prize, Fuller wins a trip to Washington, DC, courtesy of PRI.

Meanwhile, listeners to the CBC’s Q are redesigning America. There’s still time to enter their slogan contest (the deadline is July 3) — you’ll be eligible to win a trip to Ottawa.

My daughter came up with a good one...Canada, it's just a tightrope walk away.

If you are on a Canadian airline. Do not worry about making that tight connection. We (all the other passengers and the flight staff) will make it happen. And your bag will be above your head. Or under your feet.

Hi Edmund --

Good point. Hindsight is 20/20 on that one. In any case, we hope David will enjoy the vacation. And yeah, come on Americans, win that Q contest!

U-S-A! U-S-A! Etc.

Thanks for writing.

As someone born in London (England), who then grew up in both the U.S. and Canada, I've been greatly enjoying watching the two sides wrestling with the differences I've delighted in most of my life. David Fuller's entry jumped out at me early on, as well, and is a deserving and spot-on winner.

The only thing that's been bugging me, since this is all about enhancing cross-border, cross-cultural awareness, was why not have the U.S./Studio 360 winner visit Ottawa, and the Canadian/Q winner come to Washington. However, all y'all (yes, I now live in the South) are apparently cannier than me and anticipated that native residents would have an edge in these contests. Now that a Winnipegger has won Studio 360's side, we need an U.S. resident to step up and win the Q contest and cultural diversity will be properly served.
