Listener Challenge: Photo Remix

Extra Credit

Wednesday, November 14, 2012 - 05:00 PM

Jerry Uelsmann
and Maggie Taylor have made distinguished careers out of manipulating images: he's an old-school darkroom guy, while she's embraced the computer.

For this challenge, they have provided ten images for you to remix into an original composition, any way you like.

UPDATE 12/21: The winner of our contest is Rhett Rebold.

But you can still download the images and complete the challenge just for fun!

Now that we've all submitted our photos....what happens next? Anything?

Thanks!

@lightrenegade -- Unfortunately our submission system isn't able to process gifs (which is why you're seeing your piece as a still image) -- we're working on that. In the meantime, have you posted the gif anywhere else? If you have a URL, post it as a comment under your submission. (That way, people can at least see it in full-resolution there.)

@Linda -- wow, you're hard core!

Thanks both for sharing your work!

Thank you Studio 360, for allowing me the opportunity to share my digital collage work I absolutely love playing with photoshop to create my imagined worlds.

I have submitted a animated gif will it be able to be viewed in its fully animated state?

I absolutely love Jerry and Maggie's work thanks again .

I really needed this! A friend in NYC called to tell me about it, and as I was just finishing up my NANOWRIMO novel, I jumped at the chance to doing something else. I've always admired surrealism, and so Taylor's and Uelsmann's photos are great examples of how to get a lot of extra narrative into a photo. All of the 10 images relate to their works, especially the butterflies and the trees, but it was wonderful to be able to use our own photos too. Thanks!

Rhett -- thanks for your feedback on the submission process.

Carol -- if you create a profile on our site and sign in, you can give entries the thumbs-up or -down. But Jerry and Maggie will be doing their own judging.

The "Submit Survey" button never gives you the indication that your piece was uploaded. Evidently just hit the button once and it's uploaded. Mine showed up instantly on the submissions page.

I noticed the submissions have scores, like 1/2 or 2/3. How are those scores determined? What do the two numbers represent?

I hope that I uploaded the file correctly ... will check back in a while to see if it's there ! its the right file size 4.31 mgs and a jpg. And I am on working on a mac. Thanks so much I am a big fan of yours.

Jerry Uelsmann, one of few others image makers that made me go with the photography more than 10 years ago. Of course as a professional photographer I have to deal with so many not surrealistic stuffs, but still my passion is for photo manipulations and creation of imaginary reality.

Nov. 24 2012 09:55 AM

When in art school (69-73) I never considered Jerry Uelsmann a photographer. And to be frank, he is really a picture maker. But the distinction is far less important to me now. Of course, I was aping the ideas of my teachers... as we all do when young.

Sorry, I accidentally submitted the same image twice. I commented under one that the duplicate should be deleted.

I'd love to do this, but I don't think Paint is up to the task, and I don't have a better program. :-( I'm sure there is something free online I could use.

Dear Al, Barbara, and others --

Sorry about the problems you've encountered trying to upload your images. We've determined that the system can only accept .jpg, .gif or .png files smaller than 5 MB. (I've added this information to the prompt above.)

Again, we're sorry for the hassle -- I hope you'll convert and upload your compositions, we're eager to see them!

Best,
Jenny

Al

I have tried several times to upload a file to your web site. The file appears in the list, I check submit survey, and it just seems to sit there...forever...hours!!! I am connected via DSL and am able to send emails okay. Is there any limit to file size? I have tried the full resolution TIFF as well as a downsized JPEG, 25 MB and 3.7 MB respectively. I really hope to show the work to Jerry and Maggie.

Hi Scott --

Looks like you were able to upload your images after all. (Btw, I've taken down the duplicates.) Thanks so much for both of your entries!

My image is not uploading. I tried using both Firefox and Safari

Leital from Studio 360

I've been able to download the file via Firefox on my Macbook and unzip & open the files successfully. One possible issue - you have to give the file a few minutes to download. At one point for me it looked like the whole file had saved to my desktop, and I tried to unzip it but nothing came up. Then when I opened my "downloads" window I realized it had only dld'd halfway. Maybe that's the problem?
Are you using Mac or PC?

Nov. 18 2012 02:49 PM
V.

Leital, I'm having a problem too. It downloads, but doesn't open correctly. The downloaded file is corrupted or has an error. I'm using Firefox.

Kathleen - what browser are you using? What happens when you click the link? Does the file not download or do you just have trouble opening it once it downloads?

I am having trouble downloading the zip file. Am I doing something wring?
