Herbie Hancock (Verve Music Group)

Herbie Hancock

Over his nearly 50-year career Herbie Hancock has experimented with all kinds of genres, including classical, jazz, funk, and hip-hop. Hancock can now add folk to the list. His latest record is River: The Joni Letters, and on it he finds a kindred spirit in the music of Joni Mitchell. Hancock tells Kurt that when he first met Mitchell in the late 1970s he was surprised by what he heard.

Great to hear from the artist. But Kurt needs to pull back a bit. He is doing 50% of the talking, interrupting his guest, trying too hard to show how knowledgeable he is. I suggest doing a measurement of how much time he speaks during the interview, and pull it back to 20%. I kept wishing that Herbie was allowed to finish his paragraph.

Thanks for the fine program.

This interview is like clear water- refreshing. Love the way music is interspersed in the interview to illustrate what Mr. Hancock is talking about. And I love his humility in crediting his Buddhist practice for his creative inspiration. Thanks, Kurt!
