Destination: Omaha

Click here to view a sideshowKurt heads back to his hometown. No longer just beef and Warren Buffett, Kurt finds a vibrant indie rock, film, and visual arts scene there. Artists, politicians and philanthropists –- including filmmaker Alexander Payne and Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst –- tell us what makes Omaha so nice to come home to. And we hear from other musicians on Omaha’s hot Saddle Creek label, including the tap-dancing percussionists of Tilly and the Wall. Produced by Studio 360's Derek John and Pejk Malinovski.

The audio link to the story about Omaha's arts community seems not to be working. It links to the Amy Mann audio instead.

James is right, which sucks because I've been looking forward to the Omaha show going up all week.

New York/Omaha

I--just this hour--moved from Pomona, New York to Omaha, NE for a job opportunity. I know nothing of this town, and hearing your story is going to help me adjust. I'm actually in a Fairmont Inn, apparently in walking distance from Wanda Ewing's Studio. Thank God I can still listen to my NY public radio station through the internet!!

Actually, I have a close friend I met in 1990 who always told me what a cool arts scene Omaha had (she was into fashion) so I just always thought of it as an cultural oasis in the Midwest. I've heard there's a nice scene in Tulsa, too.

Thank you so much for your segment on Omaha! I moved to LA from Nebraska about 5 years ago. I was so surprised to get in the car today and hear someone say "Old Market" - my first thought was, they can't be talking about Omaha, can they? Thank you for painting an accurate picture of a great city that, even with its booming art and culture scene, struggles with the same things much of the midwest does as well. I really do believe the best is yet to come from Omaha!

Omaha

Thank you SO much!!! FYI, I sent the following email to about 400 people telling them to listen to this. I have gotten so many responses about people sitting outside their work this morning, listening to the entire thing. So to all those Omaha-lifers, transplants, and former residents, this one's for you!

Subject: Omaha's World Debut

Hello everyone!

If you have ever visited, lived in or (dare I say?) loved Omaha, you have to listen to this piece that aired on NPR about it. I heard in the car this morning on the way to work and it made me fall in love with my hometown all over again. So, even for those of you who are less enthusiastic about the "Big O!" than I am, it's worth a listen. All my love, from Omaha, of course.

Yours truly,

Katie
