(Iris Bahr)

Disco Inferno

Every year at summer’s end, a ragtag community of free spirits gathers in the Nevada desert for Burning Man, a massive art project with a fiery finish. Intrepid correspondent “Fiona Chutney” (a character played by actress and writer Iris Bahr) hopped a ride to the festival in an RV full of creative anarchists, and found herself in an epic dust storm.

Wow, listening to that was excruciating. Fiona's voice is like nails on a chalkboard and her commentary is some of the "squarest" rubbish I've heard...ever.

Dodger clearly ain't a burner.

10-time attendee here, and I just wanted to say that I enjoyed Fiona's audio tour. She captured the silliness, the awe, the surreality of it all. Kudos! Hope to see ya back home next year. :)

Filled with the usual slant towards sex, drugs and rock and roll, but I was touched by "Fiona"s ending statement and admission she wound be back, regardless of her veracity :)

Burning Man is so much more than this..its a place of transformation for the weary soul, and a harbor for misfits. It's Home. I hope SOMEbody, SOMEday does a popular article on it that shows the 85% of Burning Man that is NOT sex and drugs.

Suenos del Burning Man

Oh, I think it was an amusingly accurate description of a typical virgin's bafflement slowly turning to some level of understanding, acceptance, and even love of the place. The availability and celebration of sex, drugs, and incessent OONTZ OONTZ OONTZ OONTZ coming from every sound system are the most obvious things that a newbie will notice and report on, before they've delved into the deeper, more subtle treasures available through our city. Try to remember your first year, when you walked around for a couple days in baffled wonderment that such a place could even exist in an increasingly corporate, sterile America.

By the end of the report she's definitely gotten her head more wrapped around the experience; the community, the acceptance, and the freedom of interaction that just rises up when we're no longer spending our time trying to sell things to each other. She was definitely letting herself get transformed and to be touched by the experience.

Transformations take time to gel. By the time this aired she'd probably gotten herself linked up with a local collective of burners, and is hard at work on the design of some art car, which will be something like a giant scented candle, that's really a DJ booth, that really *IS* a giant scented candle...

I second Mike's thoughts heartily! Fiona made me smile. Ahh, to think back on my first year of wonder, and how I was already coming up with ideas for the next year on the drive home. :)

Someone on staff at Studio360 really likes Iris Bahr. This listener certainly does not. I find her "characters" grating and otherwise unfunny. Please reconsider utilizing her services again in future.

I tend to agree with Zig's commentary above. BM is so much more than this.

If you want to see MY Burning Man--try some of Halcyon Pink's videos and commentaries. For me, and probably for many, he captures the real spirit and life that are found there.

Google--hugnation and halcyon pink--the next best thing to being there :^)

Get off your high-horses, ye uptight dum-dums. It would be impossible- IMPOSSIBLE- to capture all of Burning Man in a ten-minute light radio piece. So she has gone about trying to deliver a slice of it, one wherein a large portion comes not from herself but from people who are there in random conversation. It would be just as wrong to ignore or censure the sex/drugs/rock and roll aspect as it would be to overemphasize it, as it is definitely part of the event and thus fair game. Especially if the people she randomly selects feel like talking about it.

Did it convey the full multi-leveled experience of being there? Of course not! Nothing can besides Being There. So please try to judge the piece on its own merits and not within the context of whether it matches up to actual immersion into BRC. That was a very enjoyable and diverting bit of radio, end of story.

In closing: Yeesh.

The piece is playful and charming. As someone who was there this year, hearing it brought me back to the random and unexpected adventure that you find out there when you go for the first time, and I enjoyed the piece.

While I couldn't make it to Burning Man this year, I was thoroughly entertained by Fiona's piece. Nothing is like being there, but her description of the scene of misfits, artists and everyone under the sun somehow finding a place to "belong" if only for a brief moment was fantastic. I'd love to hear more from Fiona. Keep up the good work!

Fiona is hilarious!

She really brought the spirit of burning man. For me, she captured one of the most exciting parts of B-Man, the burn and that's a lot!

Love it Fiona, can't wait for more!

Cya next burn!!!

HA! Fiona you're the right person at the right place! It's very cool in a twisted way to get the essence of the burning man from ....you! Loved it. Looking forward for your report from BM 2009.
