Angels in North Carolina

The new play Southern Rapture takes place in 1996, when a local production of Tony Kushner's "Angels in America" became a political hot potato and put artistic freedom and arts funding on the line. Mary C. Curtis looks back at the ruckus.

Again, Mary C. Curtis uses her witty intellligent journalism to acurately convey the feelings of many Charlotteans who were ashamed of our elected officials "Legislating" THEIR ideas of "Morality". We have come a long way even if some of our elected officials have not.

Great story, Mary!

Incisive, balanced retelling of a big, messy story -- but one with a hopeful new chapter. I'm eager to see the show.

Mary Curtis is just like Jesus!

1996 was my first year "return" to remain in Charlotte from Chicago. Coming right into a time of media mania re: politics vs. the arts, I was ready to head back to Chitown on the first thing smokin! But, I figured that would please this new mayor from what I've gathered, so I stayed. And, most days I'm glad I did.

I so appreciate the cleverness of this story told.

You and Tommy rock!

Historically, Charlotte has liked to tout its growth as a world class city. Nice to see a report that focuses on its growth in tolerance and diversity told by one its consummate observers.

The Studio 360 piece was great not only for the rich background information (indecent exposure charges for a play... really?) but for giving a glimpse into life in Charlotte today. I hope the play makes it to NYC! Another example of real life making for the best comedy.

We've got tickets and can't wait to see it!

Thank you, Mary, for the look back and the preview. Better days have come, but yes, Charlotte will always be about keeping up appearances, and that is what so many love about it, don't you think?

We miss your columns!
