Extra Credit: A Gaggle of Plurals

A 'gaggle' of public radio hosts? A "pomposity" of public radio hosts? (Julia Lowrie Henderson)

When I was 13 I knew about schools of fish and gaggles of geese. Then I read a little book of my mom's called An Exultation of Larks. Ever since I've loved obscure collective nouns for creatures, all these actual words that seem like fictional artifacts: a parliament of owls, an ostentation of peacocks, a smack of jellyfish, a murder of crows, and so many more.

Let's create some more — for human types.

Example: if Terry Gross and Ira Glass and Robert Siegel and I got together, would we be a pomposity of hosts?

Your challenge: come up with collective nouns for any of the following:

    • Conceptual artists
    • Critics
    • DJs
    • Hipsters
    • Indie filmmakers
    • IT guys
    • Operagoers
    • Trekkies
    • Venture capitalists
    • Yoga Instructors

Post your collective noun in a Comment below, or via Twitter:

We'll reveal our favorites on the show.

UPDATE 5/2: James Lipton has chosen his winners. Thanks to all who participated!

      Hi Kurt,
Love your show. Just heard about Monticello. All of your interviewees missed what I believe to be an important point. When my wife and I visited there in 1959 or 1960 there was a stairway that began in Jefferson's bedroom and went directly down to the slave quarters. It was explained that it was for a (or more than one) slave to come and leave in secret to his bedroom. The brochure states that the stairway was a recent addition, but it obviously was not. When we revisited in 2011 and asked about that staircase, we were told that there was never one like that there. All of your biographers should know about this.

      Hello there...
      And thanks for the invitation.
It seemed to me that collective nouns might well begin with the prefix 'con' implying 'together' or 'with', and include a relevant (or playful) term as in:
      A concretion of dogmatists
      A concupiscence of libertines
      A concavity of spelunkers
      A consensus of contrarians
A concatenation of binary infix operators
      A confluence of polyglots
      A conglomeration of hoarders

I only have one entry: hipsters, the only collective noun appropriate is "a douchebag of hipsters", as in "we tried to get into that great new restaurant but there was a huge douchebag of hipsters waiting to get in".

      collectivism: A pestering of pastors

A couple of years ago the pastor of our church, our associate pastor and one of the church elders came by my studio (I'm a sculptor/retired army colonel) to take me for coffee one morning. I recall commenting that I'd heard about a pod of whales and an ostentation of peacocks, so what do you call a bunch of pastors? We went to one of our local coffee shops and after waiting in line, getting our coffee and half way through drinking it our associate pastor, a bright energetic young mam comes from out of nowhere in the conversation with, "I've got it." "Got what," I asked. "More than one pastor would be a pestering of pastors."

Sorry I missed last week's show, but here's my collectivism.

After a time I thought she'd fallen asleep but her eyes suddenly opened and she said "Got one...! A Mandacity of Republicans" and, with a satisfied smile, drifted off into dreamland.

A herc of DJs. (Or a flash of DJs, but Herc came first!) A break of DJs works too.

For Trekkies, I'll rule out "federation" and "collective" since they are already collective nouns, and say a nacelle of Trekkies. (I'm picking up a surprising amount of contempt for, even downright hostility toward, Star Trek in some of the other entries!)

Someone already suggested my first choice, a beard of hipsters, so I'll say a mustachio of hipsters. And a fedora of posers.

20 years ago at Bell Labs a large (what we might now call "main frame") computer had crashed. A group of system administrators were standing around it as we tried to get it to boot again. Someone looked at what was going on and said, "Hey, there's a crash of sysadmins". Ever since then we've used "crash" as the collective noun for a group of system administrators.

I've since gone on to write a couple books about system administration and I've never found an opportunity to mention this story. Thanks for letting me share it here!

Most of these wonderfully fascinating names for different kinds of collectives actually also correspond to identifiably unique types of group structure and behavior too, one type of naturally forming systems. Would a tight group of office friends be a "flag of mates" perhaps??

These transitory collectives all have in common being loosely bound natural social units, with the power to enrich their environments occupying a whole level of loosely bound organization of its own, in our world of various kinds of more tightly bound ones: species, cultures, silos, families, societies...

Maybe as a general term you'd call the loosely bound ones "cliques of harmonies", for forming somewhat as cliques do, by locally knitting together the harmonies of a group of related things that then forms their bond?

Another one that could work for >1 category: An enterprise of trekkies, or of venture capitalists. Maybe indie filmmakers too.

Also, for IT, I'm gonna break it down: A code of software techs, & a bus (as in serial bus) of hardware techs.

This isn't on the list on this page, but Kurt mentioned it on the show: A wonder of science fiction fans (from our sense of wonder!).

Also not on the list: A quirk of eccentrics.

Hi Kurt -- I have a couple of comments. First to the business at hand: I work at 1221 Avenue of the Americas, also known as the McGraw Hill building (I happen to work for McGraw Hill Financial). Howard Stern's broadcast studio is in this building, and from time to time, throngs of people gather outside the building--because they somehow have learned that someone famous will be visiting Howard, Lady Gaga for example--and they want to have a look.

It occurs to me that these people are: A Gaggle of Gawkers.

Secondly -- I always have a good laugh when you sign-off at the end of a broadcast telling your listeners that Andersen is spelled with an "e" not an "o". My maiden name was Aster. I always used to tell people: Aster with an "e" --(since most people, if they're not horticulturally inclined would think it was with an "o". Then, someone sent me a holiday greeting card, and the address on the envelope read: Astore. And I thought--well, come to think of it...I never say where the "e" is...and so why not. Always mean to tell you this funny story... . Just want to add how very much I enjoy listening to your show each week--it is always full of wonderful! All best, Susan (Aster--with an e) Wallman :)
