Zoot Suit Riots
In southern California during World War II, the extravagantly tailored suits of young Mexican-Americans, with broad shoulders, huge lapels, and narrow peg pants, clashed with the all-American austerity of the war. Chiura Obata
In the spring of 1942, art professor Chiura Obata and his family were among the thousands of Japanese Americans relocated to internment camps. Obata's granddaughter and a curator at the DeYoung Museum in San Francisco tell the story of Obata's efforts to bring some civility and dignity -- and art -- into the lives of his fellow internees. The film director Woody Allen has averaged a film a year for the last 25 years, winning Oscars for his writing and directing of Annie Hall and Hannah and Her Sisters. His newest film, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion -- a romantic comedy about a jewel heist and set in the 1940s -- opens August 17th.
